Overview
The 8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trek is a scenic, gradual approach to Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the western side of the mountain, the route passes through montane forest, heath and moorland before reaching the dramatic Shira Plateau and the high alpine zone. It then continues toward Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu before the summit attempt at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Why Choose the 8-Day Lemosho Route?
The main advantage of the Lemosho itinerary is its longer schedule. Rather than rushing toward the summit, the trek gives you more time to move gradually through changing elevations and landscapes. This makes the route a strong option for trekkers who want a more gradual Kilimanjaro acclimatization approach.
In addition, the western approach provides a varied mountain experience. You begin in the forest around Londorossi before entering the open landscapes of the Shira Plateau. From there, the trail crosses high-altitude terrain and joins the southern circuit toward Barranco, Karanga and Barafu.
The route also includes an important acclimatization profile. On Day 4, for example, you climb toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,650m before descending to Barranco for the night. This helps you experience higher altitude during the day while sleeping at a lower elevation.
Lemosho Route, Kilimanjaro & the Summit
Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres and is Africa’s highest mountain. The Lemosho route approaches the summit from the west before joining the southern mountain circuit. Along the way, trekkers experience several distinct ecological zones and some of Kilimanjaro’s best-known landscapes.
The route eventually reaches Barafu Camp, where you prepare for the summit push. The final ascent begins during the night and continues toward the crater rim and Uhuru Peak, subject to weather, health and mountain conditions.

What Makes This Kilimanjaro Trek Different?
Planning Your Kilimanjaro Trek
Good preparation is important because the summit section combines altitude, cold temperatures, darkness and a long descent. Therefore, trekkers should prepare with suitable hiking equipment, layered clothing, trekking footwear and enough time for gradual acclimatization.
Before choosing your itinerary, compare this route with our 7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trek and 6-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trek. Each route has a different itinerary, accommodation style and mountain experience.
You can also explore our wider African mountain climbing experiences if you are considering other high-altitude adventures in East Africa.
Ready for the 8-Day Lemosho Route?
If you want a longer Kilimanjaro itinerary with scenic landscapes and more time for acclimatization, the 8-Day Lemosho Route is an excellent option to consider.
