9-Day Mount Kenya Technical Climb – Batian via the North Face Standard Route

9 Days

Overview

The Mount Kenya technical climb is a challenging 9-day expedition to Batian Peak (5,199 m), Mount Kenya’s highest summit. Designed for experienced rock climbers, this adventure follows the North Face Standard Route, combining alpine trekking, acclimatisation and exposed multi-pitch climbing.

The proposed itinerary approaches via the scenic Chogoria route and descends towards the Sirimon side, subject to the confirmed climbing and descent plan. Along the way, climbers experience dramatic alpine scenery while preparing for one of East Africa’s most demanding summit objectives.

Batian North Face Standard Route

The Mount Kenya technical climb progresses from mountain trekking to traditional rock climbing on the North Face Standard Route. The ascent involves exposed rock, route-finding and sustained technical challenges at high altitude. Features such as Firmin’s Tower may form part of the climbing plan, depending on the confirmed route and conditions.

Therefore, participants need recent multi-pitch climbing experience, competent rope-management skills, sound judgment and the fitness to climb in cold, thin air. This expedition is not suitable for beginners or trekkers without technical climbing experience.

Acclimatisation, Equipment and Summit Planning

Proper acclimatisation and careful preparation are essential for a Batian summit attempt. Before departure, review our Tips & Guide Portal for mountain preparation advice and confirm the required ropes, protection, harnesses and other technical equipment with Elegant Wild Safaris.

Additionally, consult the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for official park information and regulations. The lead technical guide will determine the final climbing schedule and may adjust or stop the ascent according to weather, route conditions, acclimatisation and team capability. Reaching Batian is not guaranteed.
